    The Challenge

    A major public research university needed its graduates to leave with the software and AI capabilities employers were actually hiring for — not the ones a curriculum written years earlier assumed. The gap is a familiar one in higher education: academic programs are designed on multi-year cycles while the skills market moves in months, and the cost lands on graduates who enter the workforce a step behind. Nutron led the training program initiatives that closed it, running six-month cohorts across nearly three years and reaching more than 1,000 students, with instruction delivered by people building production systems rather than describing them.

    Our Approach

    Skills programs fail in a predictable way: they teach the tools an instructor learned rather than the ones employers are hiring for today, and students discover the difference at interview. We treated employer demand as the specification. Program content was built around the software and AI capabilities hiring teams were actually screening for, taught by people who build production systems, and kept aligned as those requirements shifted.

    The Program

    Six-month cohorts, run across nearly three years, reaching more than 1,000 students. The curriculum covered the full arc of shipping software rather than a single language or framework — architecture and product thinking at one end, accessible delivery, testing, and customer support at the other. Graduates could describe how a system gets built, released, and kept running, which is what interviews actually probe.
